System confirming authenticity of identity card holder - reads data from card and processes secret data fed in from holder to produce signal if true owner has card

The card carries mechanically readable data, and the test is in an on-line system with a central computer and at least one distant terminal with a card reading device and a keyboard. Data are read from the card. A first signal is generated, representing the data read from the card. A second signal is generated by the keyboard representing secret data fed by the card holder. The correct data are known only to the rightful owner. The second signal is converted in two parts, the first signal is converted into a first converted signal without any logical connection with the first signal. The converted first signal is compared at the distant terminal with the first signal part, and if the result is positive the second signal part is transmitted to the central computer which compares it with a reference signal. If the result is positive, a signal is generated which declares the holder to be the rightful owner.
