The invention comprises 5-amino-4-cyanoimidazole and the preparation thereof by reacting 4 - cyanoimidazole - 5 - carboxamide with a chlorinating or brominating agent in the presence of aqueous alkali to form the corresponding isocyanate intermediate which is subsequently hydrolysed with 0.1-2.0 N aqueous alkali at a temperature up to 100 DEG C. to the 5-amino compound. On further treatment with aqueous alkali, preferably 0.2-6.0 N, at a temperature above 100 DEG C., the 5-amino - 4 - cyanoimidazol yields 5 - aminoimidazole - 4 - carboxamide. It is preferred to form the isocyanate intermediate by treatment with Cl2, Br2, hypochlorous acid, hypochlorite, hypobromous acid or hypobromite at temperatures below room temperature. 5-Amino - imidazole - 4 - carboxamide may be isolated as the hydrochloride. |
