Vehicle IC engine performance monitoring or measurement - using engine mounting torque sensor and output signal comparison

A device determining or monitoring the power and running characteristics of i.c. engines in vehicles enables continuous monitoring and detection of variations of the measured power and other characteristics from desired parameters. The errors are indicated to the driver to enable easy diagnosis and hence economical fault correction. A sensor determines the reaction torque applied by the engine to its suspension mount on the vehicle chassis. The torque is used as a measure of the drive torque and hence engine power. Alternatively, other operating parameters may be monitored by transducers giving power proportional signals. The power signal is compared with a desired value signal in a comparator.
