Prodn. of new ergopeptine derivs. of formula (I) and their acid addn. salts comprises adding water at a 1-4C alkanol to the 9,10-double bond of the corresp, 9,10-dehydro cpd. (II), then recovering (I) as base or salt. In (I) R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl. R2 is 1-5C akyl. R3 is OH or 1-4C alkoxy. R4 is H, Cl or Br).(I) increase wakefullness so are useful for treating cerebral insufficiency. The usual dose is 0.1-10 mg/kg e.g. in oral unit doses of 1.5-30 mg. In an example, beta-ergosine in aq. acetic acid was irradiated with UV light to give 10 alpha-hydroxy-dihydro-beta-ergosine.
