Tyre for service in wintery (snowy) conditions has rubber studs making up (part) of the running tread. Grippers of comparatively harder and more wear-resistant material are mounted upon the studs and strongly forced against the bottom of the running tread by means of flexible tensioning means so that the studs form integral units with the grippers. When pressure upon the tyre increases then the studs are caused to protrude beyond the grippers. The tensioning means may be tensioning rings. The grippers are in form of bushings. Both they and the rings may be made of stainless steel.
