1483048 Surgical retractors J K HURSON 24 July 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 37278/73 Heading A5R A surgical retractor comprises a body portion for insertion into a surgical site and a handle portion projecting from the body portion, each of the portions being formed of polymeric material and at least the handle portion having a core 61, Figure 7, of ductile material, whereby at least the handle portion can be bent and twisted in any direction and is capable of retaining the shape into which it is bent or twisted until again deformed by bending or twisting. The body portion also has a core of ductile material which may consist of a solid piece of metal 60 connected to wires 62 radiating from it, and may be connected to a coil 61 of metal providing the core of the handle portion. The body portion may have flaps 63, 64, Figure 8, and transverselyextending tabs 65 at each side edge. The flaps and tabs are free of metallic core and thus cushion tissues which they contact. The retractor may be made in a variety of shapes for holding different organs. The core is preferably aluminium, aluminium alloy or stainless steel and the polymeric material is preferably dimethyl polysiloxane. The retractor may be held in the surgical site by a frame as claimed in Specification 1483049, and held on the frame by a clamp as claimed in Specification 1483050, see Division E1-2. |
