Dyestuff laser consists of a reservoir contg. a laser dyestuff soln. and a pumping light source for this. The soln. used is a 10-2 to 10-4 M soln. of a fluorescent coumarin dyestuff (I) in a polar organic solvent, contg. is not 1% water, which does not interfere with the emission. (I), some of which are novel, have the formula:- (in which A is a hydroxylate or sulphonylamino gp. deprotonised at the N. M+ is the equiv. of a colourless (in)organic cation not cancelling the fluorescence. B is a carboxyl or aldehyde gp. or its functional deriv. or an acyl, aryl or heterocyclic gp. The cyclic and acyclic gps. can have the usual non-ionogenic substits. for this type of dyestuff or another anionic gp.). The laser emits light with a wavelength in the 450-560, esp. 470-540 nm range.
