1518748 Multilayer membranes MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 8 July 1976] 15 July 1975] 28360/76 Heading B2E A multilayer membrane comprises a first layer formed from a cross linked polymer of collagen and a mucopolysaccharide, obtained by reacting collagen with the mucopolysaccharide, and cross linking the product wherein the polymer is cross linked to an M c value between 800 and 60,000 and contains at least 0.5 by weight of the mucopolysaccharide irreversibly bound to the collagen and a moisture transmission control layer formed from a non-toxic material, the control layer providing the multilayer membrane with a moisture flux of from 0.1-1 mg/cm<SP>2</SP>/hr. The mucopolysaccharide of the collagen-mucopolysaccharide composite may comprise a sulphate-containing mucopolysaccharide, e.g. chondroitin 6 - sulphate, chondroitin 4 - sulphate, heparin, heparan sulphate, keratan sulphate, or a dermatan sulphate. A moisture transmission control layer may be formed from a natural polymer or a synthetic polymer such as silicone resins, polyacrylate or polymethacrylate esters or polyurethane. |
