1,089,376. Coated tapes. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Sept. 3, 1964 [Nov. 22, 1963], No. 4490/ 67. Divided out of 1,089,375. Heading B2E. [Also in Division H1] The specification is substantially the same as that disclosed in the parent Specification 36080/64 but claims a metal shielding tape for a electric cable, having at least one side coated with a layer of a random copolymer of a major proportion by weight of ethylene and a minor proportion by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. The Specification also claims an electrical cable having a conductor core and a metal shielding tape as defined above where at least one of the surfaces of the tape is bonded with the defined copolymer to an adjacent layer. As an example of this a submarine cable having an insulated core 53 can be shielded by a first longitudinally folded tape (not shown) of, e.g. aluminium coated on both sides with the defined copolymer and a further longitudinally folded shielding tape 55 of e.g. thin steel having an adhesive coating of the defined copolymer on at least the outermost side and enclosed within a plastics jacket 57. The adhesive may be applied to the tapes by melt extrusion, powder spraying; by pouring the heated part through a fluidized polymer powder bed or by casting from a solvent solution. Various examples of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g. acrylic acid are given and the adhesive may be a graft or block co-polymer. |
