The flat solar energy collector is used for heating gaseous or liquid media. The collector has a thermally insulated absorber backplate and housing with a transparent cover. This collector is economical to make and its efficiency is high. Additional precaution measures are provided for reducing thermal losses in proportion to the extent of heating. The first region through which fluid passes has smaller number of covers than the subsequent sections downstream of the flow path. The external covers (4) are made of window glass. Additional inner covers (5) are made from thin plastics film. The absorber plate (2) has a black surface whose absorption factor is far higher than its emission factor.
