<p>1490039 Shaft seals FMC CORP 12 Feb 1976 [30 July 1975] 05509/76 Heading F2B A sealing device for sealing an opening in a wall, e.g. a ship's bulkhead, through which a rotary member, e.g. a shaft 18 extends, comprises a chamber 42 with spaced-apart walls 58, 60, surrounding the rotary member 18, a sealing member 44 located within the chamber 42, secured to the rotary member 18 and having a resilient radial flange, e.g. 48, spaced from the walls 58, 60 but capable of resilient deflection into sealing engagement with one of the walls, 60, by fluid pressure across the wall opening, e.g. by the accidental presence of water on one side of the bulkhead. The embodiment shows a sealing member 44 with two flanges 48, 50 to seal against fluid pressure from either side of the wall. It is attached to the shaft 18 by a sprung strap 64, Fig. 7 (not shown), and the flanges 48, 50 are sprung apart by a stabilizing ring 78, details of which are illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). The seal has thrust rings 74, 76 of carbon or hard plastics to provide bearing surfaces in abnormal conditions. Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) illustrate the sealing device in operation with the chamber 42 partially and completely flooded respectively.</p> |
