A filtering bed, partic. for softening, and made up from ion exchange resins and resin filtering materials, contains silvered material. 0.05-10, pref. 0.05-2, % of the synthetic resin is silvered. The silvered resin is made by charging the cationic or anionic exchange resin, or the synthetic resin filtering material, with simple or complex Ag ions. These are then converted in situ on the resin into metallic form by a reducing agent. The ion exchange beads are at least partially silvered on their internal surface. The silvered material serves for long term disinfection of water in filtering and softening installations. It leads to a total absence of germs in the bed without causing a significant reduction in exchange capacity. Silvering of the internal surface avoids abrasion losses. Germs are absent for up to 30 regeneration cycles, even if the entry water contains a high level. No silver can be detected in the eluate. Method }does not involve outlay for appts. nor an operator, and does not result in an ecological load. Appts. can be used in reverse osmosis installations. |
