A plate shear having one stationary blade and one movable blade in which the movable blade can be displaced from the plane of the cut during the return stroke is characterized in that the axis of rotation of the movable blade holder is parallel to the cutting edge of the movable blade and is located in the direction of cutting movement in front of the cutting edge of the movable blade. The shear comprises a frame 1 and a shaft 3 carrying an eccentric 4 which has a bearing surface 5 in the shape of a segment of a sphere. There are corresponding bearings 6 in the blade holder 2. Guide surfaces for the blade holder 2 comprise a surface 8 facing the breast 7 of the blade 13, and a surface 10 cooperating with a plate 11 on the back of the blade holder. The shaft 3 is movable axially by a piston-and-cylinder 15 and movement of the shaft in the direction of the arrow 14 results in the blade holder 2 tilting about the edge 16 of the plate 11 so that the blade 13 moves out of the cutting plane 17, Fig. 2 (not shown). The force tending to separate the cutters during the working stroke is opposed by the piston 15 and by an additional thrust obtained by using helically toothed gearing in the drive to the shaft. The side guides 20 for the movable blade are convex and engage an intermediate member 21 which has a co-operating concave face and a flat face which slides on the frame.
