The invention comprises solutions of poly- (acyl oxamidrazones) of formula where X is an integer and R is an aromatic, heterocyclic or unsaturated aliphatic group, in which the double bonds are conjugated with the adjacent carbonyl groups, in aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solutions. In examples poly- (terephthaloyl oxamidrazone) is dissolved in aqueous lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, poly-(2,6-naphthaloyl oxamidrazone) is dissolved in aqueous potassium hydroxide, poly(fumaroyl oxamidrazone) is dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide, poly(isophthaloyl oxamidrazone) is dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide and poly- (pyridine - 2,6 - carboxy oxamidrazone) is dissolved in aqueous potassium hydroxide. The solutions may be used to form coatings.</p> |
