The casing of a magnetic tape cartridge has a shaped portion appropriate to those magnetic characteristics of the tape which relate to recording information on the tape. The bias and erase currents and recording level may thus be automatically set. The cartridge may also set the speed, emphasis and level on playback. The cartridge may have a groove, slot or hole of dimension or location representative of tape coercivity and operating a switch or potentiometer (Figs. 1-4, not shown). In Fig. 5 lowering of the cartridge 30 causes plunger 36 to operate switch 25 selecting the tape speed while holes 34, 35 allow plungers 37, 38 to be unoperated. |
