Speed control mechanism is provided in a circular machine and comprises fast, medium and slow speed pulleys 3, 2, 1 Fig. 2, not shown, and belt shipping arms 51, Fig. 3, not shown, mounted on a bar 44 adapted to be shogged according to the dictates of cams 34 influencing pusher members 32 controlled by pattern chains 12 mounted on sprocket wheels on a drum shaft 11. There are a series of chains 12 adapted to operate in conjunction with the control drum 7 and with striping mechanism controlling the yarn guides at each of three feeders of the machine. The mechanism for causing the operation of the belt shipping arms 51 from each chain is similar and comprises a follower 17 adapted to be actuated by a link on the chain causing a lever 16 to depress a rod 21 whereby a lever 26 is advanced as a bell crank lever 24 is pivoted by the rod 21. Normally a bluff lever 30 is retained with its nose 31 in a raised position whereby the pusher member 32 is held out of engagement with a cross bar on a member 35, common to all of the members 32 as it is reciprocated by the cam 34. When the rod 21 is depressed the advancement of lever 26 causes the lever 30 to pivot so that its nose 31 moves away from the pusher member 32 so that on the next movement forward of the member 32 the cross bar of member 35 is engaged whereby it is pivoted and caused to actuate a triangular plate 41. The nose 41a of the plate 41 engages the bar 44 to move it against the action of a spring so that the bar 41 is shogged to move the belt from the fast to the medium or slow pulley. The extent to which the belt is moved is dependent upon the shape of cam 34. Consequently whenever a change of speed is required the appropriate pattern chain initiates a movement which results in the belt being shogged from the fast to the loose pulley. A pivoted catch plate 56 attached to a rod 58 influenced by a lever 61 controlled by the cam drum 7 of the machine determines the length of time the belt remains in the medium or slow pulley. The catch plate engages one of two notches in the bar 44 and retains the bar in the corresponding position until the cam drum releases it whereafter the belt is returned to the fast pulley. Alternatively the cross bar of the lever 35 may be engaged by a catch member controlled by a cam on the same shaft as cam 34 whereby the lever 35 is retained advanced until released by this catch member in which position the lever 35 retains the belt on the appropriate pulley. |
