[Also in Division B5] An annular core, Fig. 4, for use in forming an annular cavity in the cast piston head of an I.C. engine, is made from a crystalline, pulverulent or paste-like material, such as a soluble salt, in a press, Fig. 5, the material being charged into an annular space 3 between an inner die member 1 and a surrounding spring-supported ring- shroud 4 before the excess material is skimmed off and an outer die member 2 is lowered to force down the shroud 4 and compress the core material to the shape indicated in broken lines. The member 1 is mounted on a base 1<SP>1</SP> having a head enclosed by the shroud 4. An adjustable stop 6 on the shroud determines the height to which the latter is spring-urged and thus the quantity of material to be compressed. A releasable catch 7 retains the shroud 4 in lowered position after compression of the material. |
