The pinion engages a rack 8 which may be driven via a fixed nut 7 from a threaded shaft 15. A brake 13 on the carriage and an electromagnetic brake 12 on the pinion allow either to be driven via the nut (or both together with suitable part braking) a quenching spray 5 may be secured to the guide rod 6 and operate either as the carriage advances to 13 or on its return to A or both. The workpiece is retained in a second carriage 22 movable sideways with respect to rail 14 by collets 21, 21a and members 19 which individually swivel clear of the workpiece as the inductor passes. The shaft 15 may be driven at two speeds; one for swivelling; one for travel.
