The hull of a floating ship is checked by a detector such as a TV camera connected in a closed circuit to a receiver. Additional information is added to the display such as relative position and timing. A carriage (10) moves TV cameras in a predetermined pattern over the hull of a ship (11) as determined from a control desk (20). A receiver (12) contains a number of image tubes (135 etc.) corresponding to the number of cameras. A grid (14) is superimposed over each tube to give coordinate data. A data processing unit (15) determines data such as positional data while a second processing unit (18) operating in conjunction with it drives a tracing table (19).
