[Also in Division B7] A mobile crane comprises a truck 10 with steerable wheels 14 at one end thereof and pivotally supported at the other end by a wheeled chassis 20, which chassis also pivotally supports a crane unit 12 linked to the truck 10 by hydraulic rams 76 for movement relative thereto. The wheels 16, 18 of the chassis 20 are driven from the truck and the pivotal mounting points 38, 64 of the truck and the crane unit are substantially vertically aobve the axis of the wheels 16, 18 for weight distribution purposes. The telescopic mast 46 of the crane unit is similar to conventional fork lift trucks and comprises a lower U-section 56 portion slidably mounting a U-section upper section 58 and an hydraulic ram 62 acting between the portions to extend the mast. The upper portion 58 mounts a jib 70 by way of a link and pivot connection 72, 74 and a cable 80 extends from a drum 78, over pulleys 82, 84 to a block and tackle 88 suspended from the jib. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 7 and 10, not shown) the truck (110) is supported at the crane end by a pair of driven wheels (112) fixed thereto. The crane chassis (128) with wheels (122) is pivotally attached at 140 to the truck and the pivot point of the crane is between the axis of the chassis wheels (122) and the pivot axis (140) thereby distributing the weight between the wheels (112), (122). The hoist cable (178) passes around a drum (116) mounted on the rear of the truck and when the crane is not in use may serve by attachment of the block and tackle (180) to the boom 168, support 150 or the chassis 120 to pivot the crane and the chassis relative to the truck and lift the same off the ground for extra manoeuverability. Similarly by releasing the fixings (186) of the hydraulic rams (182) the crane unit may be swung forward by means of the hoist cable for passing under overhead obstructions or for transportation upon a larger vehicle. |
