L-glutamine is produced by cultivating a micro-organism capable of producing L-glutamic acid in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of at least 0.2 mole per litre of chloride ion and recovering the L-glutamine thus produced. Culturing is preferably carried out at a temperature of 27 DEG to 37 DEG C. and preferably at a pH between 6 and 9. Chloride ion may be added in the form of ammonium chloride, NaCl, KCl, CaCl2 &c., and it is desirable that the culture medium should contain an organic nutritional source e.g. meat extract, vitamins, amino acids. The product may be recovered by an ion exchange resin treatment. Specified micro-organisms are those of the genera Micrococcus, Brevibacterium, Microbacterium, Corynebacterium, Bacillus and Escherichia, a strain of microccus glutamicus being used in the examples. |
