Digital words are used which consist of several bits, each representing a binary digit. The transmission device has a store (11), to hold data bits. There is a recognition device (12) connected to the store, for generation to an output signal which gives the number of bits containing a selected binary digit. A comparator (16) is used which compares the output signal with a reference signal, and delivers the comparison result. Data is fed into the store in serial form and there is a latching device (17) which may be blocked by a signal. The latching device is connected to the comparator (17) and the store (11).
