The compressor or turbine has impeller wheels (1, 2) carrying axial flow blades (6, 7). The blades have roots inserted in axial slots in the impeller wheels. There is a platform between the root and the working section of the blade and the platforms of circumferentially adjacent baldes about to form a continuous ring. A small space is left between adjacent blade roots between the platforms and the outer rim of the wheel (1, 2). Unwanted recirculation from the high to the low pressure side could take place through this.
