1516133 Portable containers GKN SANKEY Ltd 12 May 1976 [26 Feb 1975] 7980/75 Heading B8D [Also in Division B5] A beer keg comprises two plastics shells 10 and 11, which are butt-welded together at 39 to provide a fluid-tight joint and which are secured together by a sleeve 35 (Fig. 2, not shown), integral with one shell and spot-welded to the other shell or by a separate plastics sleeve 26, circumferentially spot-welded to both shells. As shown, the separate sleeve 26 is initially spot-welded ultra-sonically at 27 to the shell 10. The shell 11 is then inserted into the sleeve and the butt-weld 39 formed. Subsequently, the sleeve is ultra-sonically spotwelded to the shell 11 at 28. The butt weld 39 may be formed by friction-welding or by hot-plate welding in which the end faces of the shells to be welded together are heated prior to their engagement with a hot-plate. The sleeve 26 is located between rolling rings 16, 17. Each shell is provided with an integral chime 21 whose thickness is reduced adjacent its junction 23 with the shell so that impact forces are absorbed by deflection of the chime. Handholes 24 are provided in the chimes. |
