[Also in Division C5] Esters of copolymers of 1-olefins containing at least 22 carbon atoms with maleic anhydride may be used to improve the fluidity of hydrocarbon liquids. Preferred esters are derived from commercial alcohols based on behenyl and eicosyl alcohols. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of di-t.butyl peroxide and esterification in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid. Examples describe the copolymerization of mixtures of (1) C 30 and higher olefins with maleic anhydride, and the esterification of the copolymers with (2 and 5) behenyl alcohol and (3 and 4) eicosyl alcohol; and of (6) mixtures of C 22-28 olefins with maleic anhydride, and the esterification of the copolymers with (7) behenyl alcohol. |
