Pipe coupling with sealing ring - with ring retained in circular groove with overhanging lip

A pipe coupling has one half with a flange with a tail piece (1) which is welded or brazed to the end of a pipe. This flange has an external thread (2) to suit the coupling nut (7). The nut (7) has a recess (5) which engages the collar formed on the end of the second tail piece (4) on the other coupling half. A circular groove (3) with an overhanging lip (10) is cut in the end face of the flange of the first tail piece (1). This overhanging lip retains a sealing ring (6) of PTFE or silicon rubber. The ring (6) is thus prevented from accidentally falling out when the joint is dismantled.
