An automatic assembly machine for insertion of bundles of laminations in the winding former of small transformers includes an actuator to move the bundle of laminations and a height equalising wedge to ensure the bundle is of correct height to match the transformer. The machine has a base plate having a hole to receive the winding former. Bundles of laminations are removed from a stack held in a magazine and pushed into position by an actuator. Due to slight variations in thickness of individual laminations, the overall height of the bundle may vary. The end of the actuator is therefore provided with a height adjusting wedge to prevent uncontrolled movement of the topmost lamination.
