A method of binding a package with stretched, thermoplastics tape, e.g. polypropylene or polyamide, consists of wrapping a loop on the tape around the package and a supporting plate below the package, lapping the ends of the tape and seal-welding them together by frictional heat. The portion of tape leading from the store is lead forward at a certain distance below the front end of the tape where it has already been wrapped around the package and supporting plate; this forms a gap between these two portions into which a length of thermoplastics rod, esp. 2-5 mm in diameter. can be introduced transversely as welding material; this rod is then rapidly rotated though total or partial revolutions at high speed, esp. 5,000-10,000 rpm, to heat it up; the rear portion of the binding tape and forward portion of this tape are then clamped at position just behind and just ahead of the welding rod, the rear portion being in addition cut from the supply reel, so that the lengths of tape in the region to be welded are now unstressed; these are then pressed together by a pressing device acting upwards against the underside of the support plate at high pressure, so that the weld is completed. While the entire tape around the package remains stressed, the portion to be welded is unstressed during the welding operation, thus avoiding stretching distortion and possible damage in this region. |
