The ball is manufactured from a cylindrical rod which has a small diameter neck behind the ball. The ball may be hollow or solid, the neck being formed on a second phase of machining. A third operation still maintains machining on the same centre line and cuts into the back of the ball. A fourth operation blends the ball surface into the spindle edge.
