978,423. Continuous moulding of impregnated glass fibre. UNIVERSAL MOULDED FIBER GLASS CORPORATION. Aug. 31, 1962 [Sept. 15, 1961], No. 33512/62. Heading B5A. The formation of continuous synthetic resin impregnated glass fibre objects by drawing through a forming die is initiated by placing the reinforcement through the die connected to a pilot-piece and impregnating the reinforcement to the rear of the die with resin which is hardened upon pulling through the die. A pilot piece P, of pre-formed resin impregnated glass fibre or of plywood, gripped between hydraulically constrained endless chain treads 6, is lapjointed upon table 11a to reinforcing matted, woven or roving glass fibre extending from supply spools 15 through empty resin pan 14, and separated die halves 12 and 11 coated with wax or silicone grease and covered with cellophane. The pilot joint is made with coldsetting polyester resin 19 applied from in advance of the tapered die inlet 18, the die parts are secured together and heat-hardenable polyester resin introduced into pan 14. After resin 19 has hardened the die parts are heated to harden the impregnated glass fibre as this is pulled through. The die inlet 18 may be cooled. The heat-hardenable resin may incorporate 0.1 to 5% Carnauba wax. |
