In an MHD power plant using a high temperature plasma comprising combustion gases seeded with an alkali, the seeded plasma exhausted from the MHD generator is passed through a storage-type regenerative heater in alternation with air or other combustion-supporting gas, substantially all the heat transfer medium in the heater in contact with the seeded plasma being heated by the seeded plasma to a temperature greater than the temperature at which the equilibrium vapour pressure of the seed material equals its partial pressure. At the beginning of each heat storage cycle, condensation and deposition of seed material within the heater occurs until the temperature of the coolest part of the heat transfer medium (pebbles or refractory bricks) is above the dew point of the seed material, the deposited seed material is re-evaporated and carried away by the plasma. Blockage of the heater by accumulated seed material is thus prevented, and the seed material is retained in the plasma for subsequent recovery and re-use. Three heaters may be used, the arrangement being such that one heater heats the air while the two other heaters are being heated by the plasma. The valves for controlling the flow of air and plasma through the heaters may be opened and closed automatically by timing means or by temperature sensors located at each end of each heater.
