Mirror is made on the surface of an Al or Al alloy workpiece, which has been formed to the required shape and has the min. possible surface roughness. The workpiece is anodised; and the anodised surface is finely ground, polished, and then coated with metal atoms.The metal atoms are pref. aluminium obtd. by vacuum vapour deposition, and the Al mirror surface may be coated with an optically transparent protective layer which has filter properties, esp. quartz.The use of a glass substrate is avoided, and the al (alloy) substrate provides a robust mirror with a surface of excellent optical quality. The mirror is esp. used as a mobile mirror, e.g. in scanning systems using visible- or IR- light.
