16-Methylene-17-alkoxy steroids of formual (I) are new: (where R1 is 1-6C alkyl, R2 is H, OH, 2-7C acyloxy or 1-6C alkoxy, X is H, F or Cl). (I) are useful as anti-inflammatory agents (e.g. for topical treatment of skin disorders or for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis) and as intermediates for other pharmaceuticals. A typical cpd. is prednylidene 17-ethyl ether 21-acetate. In an example, this is prepd. from prednylidene 21-acetate and EtI in the presence of Ag2O.
