The device has a hydraulic force-generating device which serves to press the rollers (6, 8) together and has a pressure-force transducer (20). The working pressure space (30) of the transducer (20) is fed with hydraulic pressure medium via an adjustable pressure control valve (36) which determines the working pressure in the transducer (20). In addition, the working pressure space (30) is connected to a discharge line (34) via an adjustable pressure-limiting valve (28). The two adjustable valves (28, 36) can be coupled to one another in such a way that the respectively set nominal pressure of the pressure-limiting valve (28) is higher than the respectively set nominal pressure of the pressure-control valve (36) to such an extent that flowback via the pressure-limiting valve (28) does not take place under normal operating conditions. As a result, it is ensured that the hydraulic fluid does not have to be continuously circulated so that the power losses associated with it are eliminated. <IMAGE>
