The lump-shaped articles (1) of a few centimetres in diameter are fed on a conveyor band (3) and are supplied by means of deflecting flaps (24) to a plurality of parallel channels (20), from which they pass into feed vessels (7) having at least one chamber (8). The articles are decanted out of these chambers (8) into containers (4) running through under the chambers (8). Light barriers (L1, L2, L3) ensure that a build-up of articles occurring in the channels is broken down before new articles are supplied to the respective channel. A further light barrier (L4) counts the articles (1) located in the chamber (8) and causes these to be emptied into a container (4) when a predetermined number of articles is present in the chamber.
