<p>Stable water-dispersible compsns. consist of mixts. of (a) 15-75% by wt. of a polyopolyester, (b) 85-25% of an anionic vinyl polymer, non-gelatinised, dispersible in water of mol. wt.% 5000-100,000 and contg. side-chain COOH gps. in 1n amt. of 0.4-4 moles/1000g polymer and (c) 10-50% (in relation to total wt. of (a) and (b) of a compatible aminoplast cross-linking agent of mean vol. wt. is not >1500. The polyol polyester is prepd. by reaction of (i) a polycarboxylic acid free from any other functional groups and (ii) a non-ionic polyol polyether resin contg. only C, H, and O and, possibly, one Hal atom, of mean mol. wt. 300-2000, contg. is not 2 alcoholic OH groups; moreover, it must contain is not 20% by wt. of hydropholic fractions originating at least in part, from aromatic and cycloaliphatic prods., and is not >80% of hydrophilic fractions consisting of -(CH2-CH2O)- groups. The compsns. can be used to coat metal, wood, plastics, textiles, paper, glass, etc. They can be diluted with water if transparent coatings are desired; alternatively, pigments of any class may be incorporated. Application of coatings from an aq. medium instead of an organic solvent reduces ecological problems.</p> |
