Metallurgical coke prodn. from low-grade coal - using fusible gas-releasing inorganic additives

Prodn. of metallurgical-grade lump coke from young gas-rich coal and/or old gas-lean noncaking coal comprises mixing the finely ground coal with finely divided solid inorganic additives which partially or completely melt and release gases or steam at the coking temperatue (990-1600 degrees C, pref. 1100-1500 degrees C). Using the additives, it is stated to be possible to produce high-grade coke from low-ash coals of poor caking quality, possibly due to the fact that the additives act as binders. Suitable additives are gas-rich clay, expended clay, vulcanised glass, perlite and purified sewage sludge.
