[Also in Division H2] A transportation system comprises a vehicle 20, Figs. 1 and 2, elongated structures 34 of magnetic material secured to the bottom 26 of the vehicle, a plurality of coils of wire 36 distributed in slots 35 along the length of the structure 34, means 38 for connecting the coils to a multi-phase source of alternating current, a track 22 for the vehicle including a pair of continuous conductive members 42 and magnetic members 44 parallel thereto and low-pressure air bearing means (24), Fig. 4 (not shown) operating in a manner similar to that described in U.S. Specification 3,096,728 for supporting the vehicle for movement along the track with the structures 22 in close proximity to and substantially in alignment with the track 22, the members 42, 44 co-operating with the moving electromagnetic field produced by the structures 34 to provide the magnetic force for propelling the vehicle along the track. In modified embodiments an electromagnet, or auxiliary structures similar to the structures 34, are utilized to centre the vehicle on the track as described with reference to Figs. 5 and 8 (not shown) According to another embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), air for one of the air bearings is utilized to cool the coil structure. In still another embodiment the coil structure is slidably mounted in the vehicle and supported above the track by independent air bearing means. Air supply to air bearings may be varied by a suitable servomechanism to maintain a desired air gap between the coil structures and the track, as described with reference to Fig. 14 (not shown). If single-phase A.C. is supplied to the vehicle the latter will mount a suitable phase-splitting capacitor to provide the multiphase power for the coils 36. |
