The folding drive is for an elevator used on a harvesting machine and moves it from the working position to a stowed position. It comprises a mechanical means such as a winch (6), pulling the elevator up from the working position to a nearly vertical position. In the latter, the elevator bears against a hinging component (8) subject to the action of a ram (9). As the ram retracts, the elevator passes from the vertical position to the fully folded horizontal position. Unfolding is effected by operating the drive in the reverse direction.
