A secondary cooling system for a strand of cast metal, e.g. steel, controls the flow rate of cooling water admitted to each spray nozzle according to set values. The set values vary as a function of the distance between the spray nozle and the continuous casting mould between two curves which are specified. This prevents cracks in the surface of the metal strand. It does not necessitate any reduction of the total coolant flow and the ensuing production loss by the slower cooling rate.
