The tube has a depth-stop (7), a removable compacting foot (1') and handles (4) for manual operation. Horizontal vibrations in the tube are produced by a vibrator, which may be contained in the tube (2), mounted on top (5), or fitted outside the tube (2'). An additional vertical acting vibrator may be incorporated, or a high-speed ram may be mountted on the top of the tube. An advantage over conventional forms of compaction is that fine particles are not washed out of the loose granular filling material. The system is also well suited to operation in confined spaces, e.g for backfilling trenches.
