1488125 Screws; studs ROSAN HYDRAULICS Inc and J ROSAN 15 Nov 1974 [15 Nov 1973] 49577/74 Heading F2H [Also in Division B3] A self-boring fastener 10, such as a stud, Fig. 4, a wood screw, Fig. 11, or a bolt, Fig. 8, comprises a cylindrical element with a central cavity 14 opening at its forward end, forwardfacing cutting means 15, which may be a continuous annular knife edge or notched, as in Figs. 10 and 11, for cutting into the material 17 so that part 17a thereof is forced into the cavity 14, and an external, helical, knife-edged thread 16, which has a slicing action. The thread need not be continuous. Drive-engaging means 13 may comprise a hexagonal flange, Fig. 4, or head, Fig. 8, or recess Figs. 10 and 11. Rearward portion 11 of the stud, Fig. 4, is conventionally threaded for receiving a nut (not shown). The cutting end 15 may have an external bevel, as shown, an internal bevel (15b, Fig. 9A, not shown) or both (15c, Fig. 9B, not shown). Methods of fastening together non- metallic materials, or non-metals to metals and, in particular, wear and corrosion-resistant linings to a substrate (Figs. 12 to 14, not shown) are described and claimed. |
