A Ce-activated Y aluminate phosphor has the formula Y 3-x Ce x Al 5 O 12 , where 0À2#x#0À01. The phosphor has a garnet structure and emits white light with a decay time of less than 10<SP>-7</SP> sec. C.R.T.'s coated with this phosphor in a binder are used for flying spot scanning of coloured objects both transparent and opaque. A second phosphor, e.g. gehlenite, CaAl silicate: Ce, with the same decay time may be incorporated or form a second layer. The aluminate phosphor is prepared by heating twice a mixture of Y, Al and Ce oxides in air, O 2 , N 2 or N 2 and H 2 . |
