The mattress is for medical use, its temp. being raised or lowered depending on the needs of the patient. It has a cooling unit to provide the cold cycle direct, heat being derived semi-directly from the waste heat of the heat exchanger. The compressor unit (1) feeds into an evaporated (2) and an expansion coil (3) and then into a condenser (4) submerged in a tank (5) of water/glycol mixt. This forms a heat exchanger, the heat passing into the surrounding liquid. This is pumped (7) through the mattress (6) to raise its temp., a changeover valve (8) permitting selection of a hot or cold cycle.
