A new tert. amine has the formula (R2NCH2CH2CH2)8NR'. In the formula, R is alkyl, R' is CH2CHR2Y, CH2OR3 or CHR4N(CH2CH2CH2NR2)2. R2 is H, alkyl, aryl, substd. aryl, alkaryl, substd. alkaryl, aralkyl or substd. aralkyl, R3 is H or alkyl. R4 is H, alkyl or aryl. Y is OH, CN, CONR24, CO2R4 or COR4. The tert. amine is used as a catalyst for the prepn. of a polyurethane from a polyisocyanate and polyester- or polyether-polyol. The polyisocyanate pref. has a functionality of 2-4, and the polyol a hydroxyl index of 25-700. The polyurethane foams produced can be either flexible or rigid, both being produced in the presence of a swelling agent. Flexible foams are made by reacting a polyisocyanate with a polyether-polyol of mol. wt. 2000-7000; the isocyanato to hydroxyl molar ratio being 0.4-1.5. Rigid foams are made by reacting a polyisocyanate with a polyether of mol. wt. 300-1200 having a terminal OH gp., the isocyanato to hydroxyl molar ratio being 0.4-1.5.
