Bacterials mastitis in cattle is prevented or treated by administration of a compsn. contg. a double-strand RNA (I) or its derivs. or its complexes with a poly-base, together with a vehicle acceptable for intramammary administration. (I) may be synthetic esp. Poly I: poly C; or natural esp. that derived from Penicillium chrysogenum or its complex with a polyarginine of mol. wt. 6500. Infections which are resistant to antibiotics can be successfully treated and contamination of the milk with antibiotic residues is prevented.
