S-Triazine prodn. from formamidine acetate and orthoformate - avoiding use of hydrocyanic acid and giving high yield of pure prod.

Prodn. of s-triazine (I) comprises reacting formamidine acetate (II) with >=2, pref. 2-2.4 moles of a 1-6C alkyl orthoformate (III) at >120, pref. 130-160 degrees C. The volatile reaction prods. and then the (I) formed are distilled out, and (I) sepd. conventionally from the combined distillates. Pref. (II) is made by reacting NH4 acetate and an orthoformate and is used without further purification. (I) is used in synthesis of heterocycles. In an example, reaction of 20.8 g (II) and 58.8 g. triethyl orthoformate at 135-140 degrees C gave an 80.6% yield of pure (I).
