A centrifugal-type compressor is fitted with an integral electric drive motor in such a way that the motor may be removed without leakage of gas from the compressor. A continuous controllable flow of gas can be mixed with the compressed gas enabling the machine to be used for gas sepn. purposes in which recirculated gas flows counter current to the main flow. The appts. is esp. used for sepn. of dangerous gases such as UF6. The motor may be dismantled without disturbing the process, and the motor may be kept in an environment at a considerably lower temp. than the compressore.
