Prepn. of diamines from bis (2-cyano-ethyl)oxide or bis 1,2-(2-cyano-ethoxy)-alkanes comprises hydrolysis at 100-175 degrees C and 34-207 bars press. in a cyclic ether solvent in the presence of 25-100 wt.% ammonia based on the cyano cpd. and 1-20 wt.% of a cobalt or nickel catalyst. Reaction occurs without any scission. Suitable solvents are dioxan and THF. The catalyst may be pptd. or impregnated on a support such as bentonite, alumina etc.,. Prods are H2NCH2CH2 2A (where A is O or ORO; R is 1-6C alkylene).
