Fireproof compsns. comprise 1-99wt.% polystyrene and 99-1 wt.% of a macromolecular substance (I) with phosphonated terminal gps., pref. a mono-, di- or poly-functional phosphonated polystyrene obtd. by carbanionic deactivation using a halophosphorated deriv. (II). Amt. of (I) used is pref. such that the compsns. contain 0.1-1wt.% P. The compsns. pref. contain a blowing agent. The compsns. contain a very small amt. of flame retarding agent (cf.1-7% P in prior art compsns.), are storage stable and can be moulded into articles whose physical mechanical and/or optical properties, at most only slightly modified.
